Artist Sankarankutty Book Cover Award

The prestigious Artist Sankarankutty award (6^th) for best Book Cover for the year 2012 instituted by the Kerala Cartoon Academy and the Sankarankutty Memorial Trust goes to Sri Zainul Abid. The award was presented by Sri.K.S.Radhakrishnan, Chairman, Public Service Commission, in a solemn function in connection with the Annual General body Meeting held at Adhyapak Bhavan, Ernakulam on 28^th April, 2013. It was received by Sri.Saneesh, Indiavision, for and on behalf of Sri.Abid. Sri.C.R.Omanakkuttan, veteran author and late Sankarankutty’s comrade was felicitated in the function.

New Office Bearers of Kerala Cartoon Academy

The office bearers of Kerala Cartoon Academy for 2013-15 were unanimously elected by the Annual General body Meeting held at Adhyapak Bhavan , Ernakulam on 28th April 2013.
The new team consists of Aravindan (Chairman), M S Mohanachandran (Secretary), P U Naushad (Treasurer), Karthika Kattanam (Joint Secretary), Anil Janarddanan and Jayaraj Vellur (Vice Chairmen).
Veteran Cartoonists Sri.Sukumar and Sri.Seeri support the team as being the executive committee members and Former Chairman Prasannan Anikkad is also with them as an ex-officio.
Other members of the executive committee are Unnikrishnan, Madhoos, Surendran Varachal, Rethish, Ragesh Ansera, Basheer Kizhsseri and Dileep Thiruvattar

" It's CRICKET ", says Mahesh Nambiar

The exciting hunt for  RCB’s Official Sketchstar has come to an end! Mahesh Nambiar, member of the Kerala Cartoon Academy is now the newest member of the Official BANGALORE ROYAL CHALLENGERS (RCB) crew this season, and will be flown down to Bangalore to watch all 8 home matches.Like with the wittygraphy caricature contests, Mahesh Nambiar has steamrolled through the arduous selection process which ended up with a terse interview with Russell Adams, VP of the RCB before landing the laurel. Cartoonists Sumant Gole and Gaurav Dhobal trailed Mahesh in the process.

The selection was made from hundreds of entries received in the online cricket caricature contest run by RCB.  RCB’s journey through Pepsi IPL can be watched through Mahesh’s sketches.

Dwijith bags one more on MUM-MOHAN SINGH !

The prestigious Maya Kamath Memorial Award 2012 instituted by the Indian Institute of Cartoonists, Bangalore goes to the Kerala Cartoon Academy member, Sri Dwijith CV, cartoonist of Kerala Kaumudi daily. The award that carries Rs. 25,000/-, the maximum cash award given in any cartoon competition held in India has graced the young cartoonist, soon after the political cartoonist award instituted by the Press Club of North America (IPCNA).

Political cartoons which appeared in the print media between January 1 and December 31, 2012 were considered for this year's Maya Kamath Award .

OV VIJAYAN faces STONE AGE men !

The Executive Committee of the Kerala Cartoon Academy (KCA) strongly condemn the vicious and dastardly attack made on the stone statue of late cartoonist-writer OV VIJAYAN, one of the most gifted creative personalities of the 20th century Kerala. The act is a pointer to the possibly irreversible cultural decadence of the state.

Malayalis would be sensitised against this growing trend in some sections of the kerala society in vandalising art and artists, by way of holding exhibition of OV Vijayan cartoons, across Kerala.

It is extremely sad that the prophetic cartoonist, the king of black humour in lines, never got deserving recognition from the Kerala society. The Kerala Cartoon Academy, hereby request the Government of Kerala to take immediate steps to build a befitting memorial to this remarkable genius.

A newly erected statue of writer O.V. VIJAYAN awaiting government clearance for inauguration at Government Raja’s Higher Secondary School, Kottakkal, was found vandalised on Thursday.The statue, which is part of a memorial being dedicated to Vijayan recreating a scene of his famous novel Khazakkinte Ithihaasam, was found defaced with its nose and spectacles broken. The plastering from its lower lip and chin was also peeled off.

The monument, titled ‘Kooman Kavu,’ with a park and the statue inside, was set up on five cents of land by the teachers of the school as a tribute to the legendary alumnus.

It was caught in a controversy over the issue of permission by the municipal authorities as preparations were on for its inauguration by Malayalam University Vice Chancellor K. Jayakumar. The teachers had to suspend the unveiling of the statue when the Kottakkal municipality asked them if they had obtained permission for it. Soon a dispute erupted with some sections accusing the municipality of scuttling the project. Even allegations having communal overtones were raised from certain quarters. (3 weeks from this post, some of the human beings of the locality recreated the artwork to the original perfection)

Clearance

In the wake of the controversy, when the teachers formally applied for permission of the municipality, the municipal council on February 28 decided to refer the matter to the State government.

‘‘We have nothing against the monument. In fact, we want it there. We referred the matter for the State government’s clearance as it had already kicked up a raw,’’ said Bushra Shabeer, Kottakkal municipal chairperson.

The covered statue was found damaged when a newspaper photographer opened it on Thursday afternoon for a snap. Municipal authorities alleged a conspiracy behind the vandalism.

The O.V. Vijayan Smaraka Samithi has condemned the destruction of the statue of O.V. Vijayan.

In a statement in Palakkad on Thursday, samithi president U.K. Kumaran and secretary P.K. Narayanan said such incidents showed the cultural degradation of society.

 

‘Talibanism’ !

Leader of the Opposition V.S. Achuthanandan has termed the attack on O.V. Vijayan’s statue as ‘Talibanism’. In a statement here, Mr. Achuthanandan called for stern action against those who had indulged in the ‘barbaric’ act and pointed out that the incident had happened well after the Education Minister’s party workers had tried to get the statue removed from the school campus.

CARTOON AS ' MOTOR VEHICLE ' FOR CHANGE

The Motor Vehicles Department of Kerala has been taking the cartoonists of the Kerala Cartoon Academy along on a free ride in their awareness campaign bandwagon for the last few month - yes, in the most patronising sense. The cartoons done an year back for the Department partly as part of a collective social ethic have been displayed with deserving fanfare in many nooks and corners of Kochi, this time in the Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium at Kaloor in the context of the Auto Expo 2013.

The KCA is especially happy that one of our senior freelancers volunteered to donate cartoons printed in big sizes to the Department inspired by a personal commitment. Sri Aravindakshan, Retd. govt. servant deserves praise also for closely co-ordinating with the efforts of the MV Dept.

One more cartoonist, Sri Harikumar (HAKU) the one with the most prolific output of social cartoons in Kerala has been the star contributor to this cause , as well. With a free- flowing style of a seasoned animator, Haku 's works smack of easy adaptibility to campaigns through cartoons. The KCA proudly thank this swift but silent campaigner.

POETICALLY YOURS....

Cartoonist Anil Aroor has been in the habit of surprising all and sundry wherever he goes by producing instant and ready made caricatures from nowhere. This constant fellow traveller of the Kerala Cartoon Academy has befriended a surprisingly large number of bigwigs in the Kerala socio-cultural scene through his unique works. But this time, Sri Anil and his advocate wife Smt. Santhi have together surprised all by entering a different realm - poetry.

A PUBLISHER-cum-CARTOONIST from Kerala !

Who would not cherish entrepreneurial ambitions to set out with a publishing house in a hyper-literate state in India , especially in Kottayam, the first district in Kerala to be declared to hit the 100% literacy mark ! Cartoonists in Kerala have generally been business-cum-PR shy. Now, Shri Anil Janardanan, Ex. Committee member of the Kerala Cartoon Academy has come up with a new publishing house- DON BOOKS - that have immediate child-friendly plans of releasing purana stories and folklores of the world, in graphic form. Shri Anil who is very active doing panel illustrated stories for children is already successfully running Vega Features, a syndicate for news .

Sudheernath in search of Mr. Politician again ...

By psychological default, political cartoonist can never smile at a politician heartily. By convention, cartoonists are self-declared Pandavas against Kauravas, the archetypal wily Politician.However, compiling an anthology on any leading politician is child's game in this cartoon-rich Kerala. But to get the protagonist himself to be willing to flag off this effort especially when a fleet of arch rivals stand ready to charge in the same book with fuly loaded memoirs and anecdotes is close to very difficult.

Shri Sudheernath, Programme Co-ordinator, Kerala Cartoon Academy deserves lots of surprised looks from his peers in the doodling world itself for this recurring feat, he is found to be so fond of in the last few years. VARA VARI VEE YESS - Toon, Text, VS (a 90ish firebrand leftist politician in Kerala - is the latest of this genre. PK Manthri Award 2012 graces Prasannan Anikkad

 This year's PK MANTHRI AWARD for Cartoon instituted by the Kerala Art Academi has gone to Shri Prasannan Anikkad, Chairman, Kerala Cartoon Academy. KCA congratulate this product of the cartoon camp culture of the 80's , who has developed a unique style ambushing the shape and meaning of the text in cartoons into acidic visual political comments .

Cartoonman Badusha comes out of CDROM

The young turk in the Kerala Cartoon Academy brigade, Shri IBRAHIM BADUSHA who would better like to be called CartoonMan has come out with an excellent cartoon tutorial in CD-ROM targeted at tiny tots used to getting mad at fumbling in every attempt to make a picture out of an alphabet. Badusha has been at this alphabet-2-picture changeover fun across Kerala in kids' cartoon camps. But, only now, he became set to settle for the digital format of a tutorial. Through the dozens of illustrations, the kids would be out and out amused to learn that distance between E to Elephant is exactly the same as from W to Whale !

KCA CARTOONISTS BAG BIG AWARDS !

The first of the awards went to Sri Abba Vazhoor who bagged the first prize in the cartoon contest held by the Reserve Bank of India. Close on the heels of that, the second prize in the 'Maveli Nadu' cartoon contest held y the Malayala Manorama newspaper was full of incidents, that the prize was a classy laptop and the presenter of the award was none other than the super mega star of Malayalam filmdom, Padmasri Mammootty !


Sudheernath, Programme Co-ordinator, Kerala Cartoon Academy, who received this year's Patrakar Protsahan Puraskar for cartoon. The award is instituted by Mewar Institute Ghaziabad , in memory of Mahamana Pt. Madan Mohan Malviya.  Senior Cartoonist Kaak (New Delhi) handed over the award to Sudheernath at a function today at Gaziabad(UP) on the birthday of the Panditji. Mewar Institute Chairman Ashok Kumar Gatya, Sr Journalists,  S/Shri Shiv Kumar Mishra , Shiv Kumar goyal, Jagdish Upasane and Aravind Mohan are also seen in the picture.

Sri Joy Kulanada, the veteran of silent cartoons in India has shocked the veterans in the Malayalam blogging community - the most extensive and cohescive amongst its Indian counterparts - by bagging this year's SUPER BLOGGER AWARD 2012, instituted by www.boolokam.com.This septuagenarian ex-banker cornered 25% of the 25000 votes polled through systematic liaisoning with the help of online communities like Facebook, Google + and twitter. More than that a cartoonist toppled conventional blogging norms in Malayalam just through cartoons, a language where the text flourishes and overshadows the visuals, it is the example set by him that age is no bar to being wise online that has spurred the young ranks of the Kerala Cartoon Academy.



Sri Dwijith Payyannur was chosen as the best editorial cartoonist from Kerala by the Indian Press Club of North America (IPCNA) for its second year award.The award will be distributed by the Kerala Chief Minister, Sri Oommen Chandy at Ernakulam on 6/1/2013. Dwijith is equally at ease with the easel as well and is one of the very few cartoonists in Kerala with a tendency towards graphic applications to incorporate Adobe Illustrator in his works. He is from the northernmost part of Kerala, Payyannur.

In connection with the first death anniversary of the noted orator, academician and critic in malayalam language Dr. SUKUMAR AZHEEKKODE, elaborate comemoration functions are being organised in his native place, Kannur. The 3 day mega mela is being organised by the Paatyam Gopalan Smaraka Academic Research Centre, Kannur , where dignitaries in the fields of culture and education from all over India are expected to converge. Interestingly, the cynosure of the programmes is likely to be the Caricature-Photo exhibition on this media friendly intellectual who , to the delight of all malayali cartoonists and stage mimics, had immensely adorable and copiable physio-facial features to celebrate, as well !

As requested by the organisers of the function, Kerala Cartoon Academy members are welcomed to forward the caricatures of Dr. Sukumar Azheekkode to our mail , cartoonacademy@gmail.com , so as to reach us on or before 15th January 2013. 

The caricatures would be displayed at a special pavillion in the Kannur Stadium Corner on the 23rd, 24th and 25th January 2013.

The KCA once missed the opportunity to organise an identical exhibition an year back. This is the chance to make amends, to show tribute to the Man with Golden Tongue. Come On, we will flood Kannur with more than they ever expected !

ദ്രവീഡിയന്‍ വരകള്‍ക്ക് നമുക്കരു കുലപതിയുണ്ട്.  വേര്‍പിരിഞ്ഞുപോയെങ്കിലും ഇന്നും ആ സ്ഥാനം കയ്യടക്കാന്‍ കെല്‍പ്പുള്ളവരാരും പിറന്നിട്ടില്ലാത്തതിനാല്‍, കിരീടം വെച്ചൊഴിയാത്ത സാക്ഷാല്‍ ശങ്കരന്‍കുട്ടിയാണ് ആ കുലപതി.   1936-ല്‍ തിരുവനന്തപുരത്ത് ജനിച്ച ശങ്കരന്‍കുട്ടി ഒട്ടേറെ കലാകാരന്മാര്‍ക്ക് പിറവികൊടുത്തിട്ടുള്ള,കോട്ടയം ജില്ലയിലെ കുടമാളൂര്‍ വന്ന് താമസിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് ആ നാടിന്റെ പാരമ്പര്യം കാത്തുവന്നു.  രേഖാചിത്രരചനയില്‍ തന്റേതായ വഴികള്‍ വെട്ടിത്തുറന്നു.  അന്നത്തെ കോട്ടയം ആനുകാലികപ്രസിദ്ധീകരണങ്ങളില്‍ മിക്കതിലും (സലയാളരാജ്യം, ജനയുഗം, ദേശാഭിമാനി, മനോരാജ്യം)വരച്ചു.  ആ പടങ്ങള്‍ കാണാന്‍ വേണ്ടിയും സൂക്ഷിച്ചുവെക്കുവാന്‍ വേണ്ടിയും മാത്രമായി പ്രസിദ്ധീകരണങ്ങള്‍ വാങ്ങിയിരുന്നവര്‍ ഒട്ടേറെ.  എന്നാല്‍ അദ്ദേഹത്തെ മരണാനന്തരം ആദരിക്കാനോ അനുസ്മരിക്കാനോ വേണ്ടി ഒരു ചെറു സംരംഭമെങ്കിലും തീര്‍ക്കുവാന്‍ ആരും ഇതുവരെ മുന്നോട്ടു വന്നില്ല എന്നത് ദുഃഖസത്യമാണ്.  വിശേഷിച്ച് ഇരന്നും പിന്നാംപുറം നിരങ്ങിയും തരപ്പെടുത്തിയ അവാര്‍ഡിന്റെ പോരിലൊക്കെ ആദരിക്കപ്പെടുന്നവര്‍ നാടുനീളെയുള്ളപ്പോള്‍ ആരുടേയും ഔദാര്യത്തിനുകാത്തുകിടക്കാത്ത മഹാനായ ചിത്രകാരനെ ഓര്‍ക്കാതിരിക്കുന്നത് ഖേദകരമാണ്.   16000 പുസ്തകങ്ങള്‍ക്കാണ് ശങ്കരന്‍കുട്ടി കവര്‍ചിത്രം വരച്ചിട്ടുള്ളത്.                   ഇത് ഒരു           സാങ്കല്‍പ്പികകണക്കല്ല,

നാഷണല്‍ ബുക്ക് സ്റ്റാളിന്റെ വൗച്ചറുകള്‍ മാത്രം നോക്കിയാല്‍ മതി.  ബുക്ക് കവര്‍ ആര്‍ട്ടിന്റെ ലോകചരിത്രത്തില്‍ ഇങ്ങനെയൊരാള്‍ അത്ഭുതം തന്നെയാണ്.  നാല്പത്തിയെട്ടുമണിക്കൂര്‍ ചെണ്ടകൊട്ടുന്നതും അതിലേറെ മണിക്കൂറുകള്‍ തൊള്ളതുറക്കുന്നതും സര്‍ഗ്ഗശേഷിയേക്കാളേറെ ഒരാളുടെ കായികക്ഷമതയുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെടുന്ന സംഗതിയാണ്.  സര്‍ഗ്ഗാത്മകതകൊണ്ടല്ല കായികശേഷികൊണ്ടാണ് ഇവിടെ ശ്രദ്ധിക്കപ്പെടുന്നതെന്നര്‍ത്ഥം.  അതാകട്ടെ റിക്കാര്‍ഡുണ്ടാക്കുന്നതിനുവേണ്ടി കരുതിക്കൂട്ടിച്ചെയ്യുന്ന ഒരു കുകര്‍മ്മവുമാണ്.  എന്നാല്‍ ശങ്കരന്‍കുട്ടി 16000-ല്‍ ഏറെ കവര്‍ ആര്‍ട്ട് ചെയ്തതും അതിന്റെ 100 മടങ്ങ് മറ്റുചിത്രങ്ങള്‍ വരച്ചതും തന്റെ കായികശേഷി തെളിയിക്കാന്‍ വേണ്ടിയല്ലല്ലോ.  സര്‍ഗ്ഗശേഷിയുടെ വെളിപ്പെടുത്തല്‍ സംഭവിച്ചുപോയതാണ്.  ആ സര്‍ഗ്ഗശേഷിയെ അനാദരിച്ച മലയാളീയ സമൂഹം കൊടുവഞ്ചനയാണോ ചെയ്തതെന്ന് ഓരോരുത്തരും സ്വയം വിലയിരുത്തട്ടെ. 

തടിച്ചതും നേര്‍ത്തതുമായ വരകളുടെ വിന്യാസ സങ്കലങ്ങളാണ് ഒരു ശങ്കരന്‍കുട്ടീയ രചനയെ സുസാദ്ധ്യമാക്കുന്നത്.  ഇതിന്റെ ആത്മവത്ത കുടികൊള്ളുന്നത് ദ്രവീഡിയന്‍ പൊഴികളുടെ നിര്‍മ്മാണ ചാതുരിയിലാണ്.  ചായം തേപ്പുകള്‍ക്കുപുറമേ പൊഴിച്ചെടുത്ത തീര്‍പ്പുകളും ഗുഹാചിത്രങ്ങളിലുണ്ട്.  അവ മിക്കവാറും പൊഴിക്കപ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുക ഗുഹക്കുപുറത്തെ പാറപ്പുറങ്ങളിലായിരിക്കും.  കാരണം വെയില്‍ വീഴുമ്പോള്‍ ചലനാത്മകമാവുക പൊഴിച്ച ചിത്രങ്ങളായിരിക്കും.  വെയിലിന്റെ സഞ്ചാരഗതിയലുസരിച്ച് നിഴലുചേരുന്ന പൊഴികള്‍ക്കും അനുനിമിഷം രൂപമാറ്റം വന്നുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കും.  അങ്ങിനെ ഒറ്റ പൊഴിതീര്‍പ്പില്‍ ഒട്ടേറെ ചിത്രങ്ങള്‍ അടുക്കിവെക്കുന്നതിനുള്ള മാന്ത്രികശേഷി ദ്രവീഡിയന്‍ ചിത്രരചനാ സമ്പ്രദായത്തിനല്ലാതെ മറ്റൊന്നിനുമില്ല.  ഗുഹാന്തരത്തിലെ ചുമരുകളില്‍ ചായം തേച്ചെടുക്കുന്ന പടങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് ജീവന്‍ തുടിക്കുമെന്നത് ശരിതന്നെ.  പൊഴിച്ചുതീര്‍ത്ത ചിത്രങ്ങളുമായി അതിനെ താരതമ്യപ്പെടുത്തേണ്ടതില്ല.  പൊഴികള്‍ മിക്കവാറും ലംബമായിരിക്കും .  തിരശ്ചീനമായ പൊഴിക്കലുകള്‍ വളരെ വിരളമായേ കാണാന്‍ കഴിയൂ.  വെളിച്ചംവീഴുമ്പോള്‍ നിഴലുകള്‍ സുവ്യക്തമാകുന്നതിന് എളുപ്പമായതുകൊണ്ടാണ് ഈ രചനാ രീതി കൂടുതല്‍ ആശ്രയിക്കപ്പെട്ടത്.                                                                           

ബാംബു പെന്‍ അല്ലെങ്കില്‍ വീതിയുള്ള നിബ് ചരിച്ചും തിരിച്ചുമാണോ ശങ്കരന്‍ കുട്ടി തടിച്ചു-നേര്‍ത്ത വരകള്‍കൊണ്ട് പടം വരച്ചിരുന്നതെന്ന് കൃത്യമായി പറയുക വയ്യ.  എന്നാല്‍ ചില നിരീക്ഷണങ്ങളില്‍നിന്ന്  വ്യക്തമാകുന്നത്  നേര്‍ത്തവരകളോട്  ചേര്‍ത്ത് വരച്ചുവരച്ചാണ് തടിപ്പുകള്‍ രേഖപ്പെടുത്തിയിരുന്നതെന്ന് വ്യക്തമാകുന്നുണ്ട്.  എപ്പോഴും ഇങ്ങനെയാണോ ചെയ്തിരുന്നതെന്ന കാര്യത്തില്‍ മാത്രമേ സന്ദേഹമുള്ളൂ.  എന്തായാലും ഈ ചിത്രങ്ങള്‍ സ്ഥാനം പിടിക്കുന്നത് കാര്‍ട്ടൂണിന്റേയും ചിത്രീകരണങ്ങളുടേയും ഇടക്കാണ്.  കാര്‍ട്ടൂണുകള്‍ ഒരു സംഗതിയുടെ വാസ്തവത്തെ അല്ലെങ്കില്‍ പൊരുളിനെ വെളിച്ചത്തുകൊണ്ടുവരുമ്പോള്‍ ചിത്രീകരണം വാസ്തവത്തിന്റെ വിപുലീകരണത്തേയാണ്  സുസാദ്ധയമാക്കുന്നത്.  ശങ്കരന്‍കുട്ടി കാര്‍ട്ടൂണികമായ വരവഴികളിലൂടെ വിമര്‍ശന ബുദ്ധ്യാ വാസ്തവത്തെ വിപുലീകരിക്കുന്നത് പുതിയൊരിടത്തുനിന്നാണെന്നുകാണാം.  അങ്ങനെ തന്റേതായ ഇടത്തുനിന്ന് സാക്ഷാത്കാരം നിര്‍വ്വഹിക്കുന്നവര്‍ ചരിത്രത്തിന്റെ ഭാഗമായിത്തീരുന്നു.  അപ്പോള്‍ ചിത്രകാരന്‍ ചരിത്രപുരുഷനായി മാറുന്നു. 

കഥാകൃത്ത്  പ്രൊഫഃ സി.  ആര്‍ ഓമനക്കുട്ടന്‍ ശങ്കരന്‍ കുട്ടിക്ക് പുത്രതുല്യനാണ്.  ശങ്കരന്‍ കുട്ടിയേക്കുറിച്ച് ചോദിച്ചാല്‍, കൊട്ടയത്ത് ഒരുമിച്ചുണ്ടായിരുന്ന നാളുകളേയോര്‍ത്ത് അദ്ദേഹം വാചാലനാകും.  ശങ്കരന്‍ കുട്ടിയുടെ ശൈലി സൃഷ്ടിപരമെന്നതുപോലെ അതിന് സാങ്കേതികതയുടെ മറ്റൊരുവശവുമുണ്ടത്രേ.  അന്ന് ബ്ലോക്ക് എടുത്താണല്ലോ ചിത്രങ്ങളും ഫോട്ടോകളും പ്രിന്റുചെയ്തിരുന്നത്.  ഇങ്ങനെ പ്രിന്റചെയ്യുമ്പോള്‍ മഷി പടരാതിരിക്കാനും കൂടുതല്‍ മിഴിവ് കിട്ടാനും തടിച്ചുനേര്‍ത്ത വരകള്‍ ഗുണം ചെയ്യുമത്രേ.  അങ്ങനെ സാങ്കേതികതക്ക് വഴങ്ങുമ്പോഴും കാഴ്ചയെ ഉടക്കിനിര്‍ത്താനുതകുന്ന മാന്ത്രികതയുടെ കരവിരുത് ശങ്കരന്‍കുട്ടിയില്‍ ആപാരമാണെന്നും ഓമനക്കുട്ടന്‍ അഭിപ്രായപ്പെടുന്നു.  ഒന്നോരണ്ടോ വരകളില്‍നിന്ന് സ്ത്രീസൗന്ദര്യത്തെ വാര്‍ത്തുവെക്കാനും അവരിലെ ലാസ്യഭാവത്തെ അതിന്റെ ഉദാത്തതയില്‍തന്നെ വെളിപ്പടുത്തനുമുള്ള ശങ്കരന്‍കുട്ടീയ രചനകളുടെ ശേഷി ലോകോത്തരമാണ്.  ആ ശൈലിയുടെ കാര്യത്തില്‍ ശങ്കരന്‍കുട്ടി ആരുടേയും പിന്‍ഗാമി അല്ലെന്നതും അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് ഈ കാര്യത്തില്‍ പിന്‍ഗാമികള്‍ ഉണ്ടായിട്ടില്ലെന്നതും ആ സമ്പ്രദായത്തിന്റെ ശക്തി എന്തെന്നും എത്രയെന്നും പഞ്ഞറിയിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. 

മലയാള മനോരമ വാരികയില്‍ 'ശകുവിന്റ ദര്‍ശനം' എന്ന പേരില്‍ ശങ്കരന്‍കുട്ടിയുടേതായി പോക്കറ്റ് കാരിക്കേച്ചറുകളുടെ ഒരു പരമ്പരയുണ്ടായിരുന്നു.  മലയാളികളെ ഏരെ രസിപ്പിക്കുകയും ചിന്തിപ്പിക്കുയും ചെയ്തിട്ടുള്ള പരമ്പര ഇതുപോലെ വോറൊന്ന് പിന്നീടുണ്ടായിട്ടില്ല.  അതില്‍ വരച്ചിരുന്നത് രാഷ്ട്രീയ നേതാക്കന്മാരേയും സിനിമാ നടന്മാരേയും സാഹിത്യകാരന്മാരേയും മററുപ്രസിദ്ധരായ ആളുകളേയുമായിരുന്നു.  മറ്റുള്ളവരുടെ കാരിക്കേച്ചറുകളില്‍നിന്ന് വ്യത്യസ്തമായി ശങ്കരന്‍കുട്ടീയ വരകളുടെ മുഖം നിശ്ചലമല്ല,ചലനാത്മമാണ്.  ഇക്കാര്യത്തില്‍ സി.  ആര്‍.  ഓമനക്കുട്ടന്റെ നിരീക്ഷണം വളരെ പ്രസക്തമാണ്.   'ഇ.  എം.  എസ്.  നമ്പൂതിരിപ്പാടിനെ ആര്‍ക്കും വരക്കാം.  പക്ഷേ,സംസാരിക്കുമ്പോള്‍ അദ്ദേഹമനുഭവിക്കുന്ന വിക്ക് വരക്കാനോ അദ്ദേഹം ആയാസപ്പെട്ടുസം സാരിക്കുമ്പോഴുണ്ടാകുന്ന പ്രയാസം നമ്മളെ അനുഭവിപ്പിക്കാനോ വരകളിലൂടെ ശങ്കരന്‍കുട്ടിക്കല്ലാതെ മറ്റാര്‍ക്കും കഴിഞ്ഞിട്ടില്ല'.  അതാണ് നിശ്ചലതയില്‍ ചലനാത്മകത സന്നിവേശിപ്പിക്കാന്‍ കഴിവുള്ള ശങ്കരന്‍കുട്ടീയ വരകളുടെ മഹത്വം.  ആളിന്റെ സ്വഭാവം,പ്രവൃത്തി,പദവി എന്നിവസൂചിപ്പിച്ചിരുന്നത് സവിശേഷ ജംഗമവസ്തുക്കള്‍ വരച്ചുചേര്‍ത്തുകൊണ്ടാണ്.  ഇപ്പോഴത്തെ കേരള മുഖ്യമന്ത്രി ഉമ്മന്‍ ചാണ്ടി ആദ്യം മന്ത്രിയാകുമ്പോള്‍ ആ മന്ത്രിസഭയിലെ ഏറ്റവും പ്രായം കുറഞ്ഞമന്ത്രി എന്ന വിശേഷണത്തിനും അര്‍ഹനായിരുന്നു.  ശകുവിന്റെ ദര്‍ശനത്തില്‍ ശങ്കരന്‍കുട്ടി ഇതേപ്പറ്റി വരച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത് കണ്ടാല്‍ മുഖ്യമന്ത്രിപോലും ചിരിച്ചു മണ്ണുകപ്പും.  ഈര്‍ക്കിലിമീശയും കോലന്‍മുടിയുമായി കൊലുന്നനേയുള്ള ഒരു ചെറുക്കന്‍ വള്ളിനിക്കറുമിട്ട് (സ്‌ളെയ്റ്റുപിടിക്കുന്നതുപോലെ) ഫയലും പിടിച്ചോണ്ടുനിന്നു ചിരിക്കുന്നു! അഭ്യന്തര മന്ത്രിയായിരുന്നപ്പോള്‍ കെ.  കരുണാകരന്‍ പോലീസുകുപ്പായമട്ടുകൊണ്ടു നടക്കുന്നത്.  .  .   കോണകം മാത്രമുടുത്ത തിക്കുറിശ്ശി സുകുമാരന്‍ നായര്‍.  .  .  താങ്ങാവുന്നതിലേറെ ലെഗ്ഗേജുമായി സഞ്ചാരസാഹിത്യകാരന്‍ എസ്.  കെ.  പൊറ്റക്കാട്ട്... ഗന്ധര്‍വ്വനാദം പൊഴിക്കുന്ന കെ.  ജെ.  യേശുദാസ്...  വിടര്‍ന്ന ചിരിയുമായി എം. എന്‍. ഗോവിന്ദന്‍ നായര്‍...  ഗൗരവം വിടാതെ മുണ്ടശ്ശേരി മാഷ്...  തോക്കുമായി കെ.  എം.  മാണി...  നോക്കുമായി കെ.  പി.  ഉമ്മര്‍...  അതെ, പറഞ്ഞു പൊലിപ്പിക്കാനാവില്ല!!!!

പടം മഷികൊണ്ടുവരച്ചോ,ഉളികൊണ്ടു പൊഴിച്ചോ,ചായം തേച്ചുപിടിപ്പിച്ചോ ആവണമെന്നില്ലല്ലോ.  മാധ്യമമല്ല ഇവിടെ പ്രധാനം കലാകാരന്റെ ശേഷിയാണ്.  ജീവനുള്ള ശരീരങ്ങളെ വേണ്ടപോലെ വിന്യസിപ്പിച്ചും പടം വരക്കാം.  സ്ഥാവര- ജംഗമവസ്തുക്കളും ചരാചരങ്ങളുമുപയോഗിച്ചു തീര്‍ക്കുന്ന 'ഇന്‍സ്റ്റലേഷന്‍' ഇപ്പോള്‍ പ്രചാരം വര്‍ദ്ധിച്ചുവരുന്നു.  സിനിമയില്‍ ഇത് മുന്‍പേയുണ്ട്.  അത് കാസ്റ്റിംഗ് എന്നുപറയും.  കാസ്റ്റിംഗില്‍ വിരുതുള്ളവര്‍ സംവിധായകരേയും അതിശയിപ്പിക്കാറുണ്ട്.  അവിടേയും ശങ്കരന്‍കുട്ടി ഒന്നാമന്‍തന്നെ.  മലയാളത്തിലെ ക്ലാസിക്കായ 'ചെമ്മീനി'ന്റെ കാസ്റ്റിംഗ് ശങ്കരന്‍കുട്ടിയുടേതായിരുന്നു.  ചെമ്മീനില്‍ നമ്മള്‍ കാണുന്ന ചെമ്പന്‍ കുഞ്ഞ് തകഴിയുടേതോ രാമു കാര്യാട്ടിന്റേതോ അല്ല,ശങ്കരന്‍ കുട്ടിയുടെ രചനയാണത്.  ചെമ്മീന്‍ സിനിമയുടെ ആദ്യചര്‍ച്ചകളില്‍ ചെമ്പന്‍കുഞ്ഞിനെ അവതരിപ്പിക്കാന്‍ പരിഗണിച്ചിരുന്നതുപോലും ശങ്കരന്‍കുട്ടിയേയാണ്,ചെമ്പന്‍കുഞ്ഞ് രണ്ടാമത് കല്യാണം കഴിച്ചുകൊണ്ടുവരുന്ന സ്ത്രീയുടെ മകനെ അവതരിപ്പിക്കാന്‍ സി.  ആര്‍.  ഓമനക്കുട്ടനും പരിഗണന ലഭിച്ചിരുന്നു.പിന്നീടെങ്ങിനേയോ ഈ രണ്ടുപരിഗണനകളും വഴിമാറിപ്പോയി.  കൊട്ടാരക്കര ശ്രീധരന്‍ നായരാണല്ലോ പിന്നീട് ചെമ്പന്‍കുഞ്ഞിനെ അവതരിപ്പിക്കുന്നത്.  തലമുടി പറ്റെ വെട്ടിയും മുഖത്ത് അരിമ്പാറവെച്ചും ചെമ്പന്‍കുഞ്ഞിന് രൂപം കൊടുത്തത് ശങ്കരന്‍ കുട്ടിയാണ്.  അതുപോലെ മറ്റു കഥാപാത്രങ്ങള്‍ക്കും. 

(ശങ്കരന്‍കുട്ടിയെ കുറിച്ചുള്ള ഈ എളിയ പഠനം ഇവിടെ ചുരുക്കുന്നു.  അദ്ദേഹത്തേക്കുറിച്ച് മികച്ച ഒരു പഠനം തയ്യാറാക്കുന്നതിനുവേണ്ടി 2005-ല്‍ കുമരകത്ത് അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ കുടുംബം വാടകക്കു താമസിക്കുന്ന വീട്ടില്‍് ഞാന്‍ പോയിരുന്നു.  അദ്ദേഹത്തന്റെ മകന്‍ ഋഷി ശങ്കറാണ് എനിക്ക് വിവരങ്ങള്‍ പറഞ്ഞുതന്നതും ചിത്രങ്ങള്‍ തന്നതും.  അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ജീവിതത്തെപ്പറ്റി കൂടുതല്‍ എഴുതാന്‍ നിവൃത്തിയില്ല.  കാരണം,സി.  ആര്‍.  ഓമനക്കുട്ടന്‍ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ജീവചരിത്രം എഴുതിക്കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുകയാണെന്നറിഞ്ഞു.  ഞാന്‍ മുമ്പേകേറി എഴുതി ധാരണപ്പിശകും വിവാദവുമുണ്ടാക്കേണ്ടല്ലോ.  ഓമനക്കുട്ടന്‍ സാര്‍ എന്റേയും ഗുരുനാഥനാണ്.  ഇക്കാര്യത്തില്‍ അര്‍ഹതയും പ്രാഗത്ഭ്യവും അദ്ദേഹത്തിനാണുതാനും.  പുസ്തകം പുറത്തിറങ്ങുന്നതുവരെ കാത്തിരിക്കാം.  ഈ ലേഖനത്തിനുവേണ്ട വിവരങ്ങളും സാമഗ്രികളും തന്നതിന് ശങ്കരന്‍കുട്ടിയുടെ കുടുംബത്തോടുള്ള നന്ദിയും കടപ്പാടും ഇവിടെ രേഖപ്പെടുത്തുന്നു)
