Those acerbic sketches poking fun at the politics of the day and the wry but pointed humour of `common man' have become a part of Indian psyche.
Commemorating the life and works of cartoonist R K Laxman, who passed away recently , the Kerala Cartoon Academy organised an exhibition of his works, `Lakshmanarekhakal', at Nanappa Art Gallery on Sunday .
Around 60 works of the late cartoonist were presented at the exhibition, which will go on till February 3.
“These are the voices of common man, which caught the attention of authorities, and sought possible solutions,“ said Hibi Eden MLA, who inaugurated the exhibition.
“They served as warning for authorities,“ he said. The exhibits included works from the `You Said It' comic strip which appeared in The Times of India. The strip chronicled Indian life and politics through the eyes of the common man.
“Like Shankar, Laxman was university whose passing will remain an eternal loss,“ said the chairman of Kerala Cartoon Academy Aravindakshan P.
“One might think it's simple. But time has proved that only Laxman can do such works,“ he added.
“His works breathe life. If you look at any of them, you see minute details like the road on which there is a cow, or a post where there is a crow...Things that you really see around,“ he said, adding that recognition for cartoons has fallen considerably like freedom of expression.
“The way a cartoonist deals with a social issue and the way a reader interprets it must ideally be synchronised. This happened in Laxman's times. Today , unfortunately such a condition does not exist and this hinders our freedom to express,“ said former chairman K C A Prasannan Anickad.
“Sensitive issues like terrorism or religion cannot be taken up by a cartoonist as it would leave us in a `CharlieHebdo' situation,“ said another member of the academy .
The Kerala Cartoon Academy will also organise workshops and exhibitions in the coming days on road safety and drug control for budding artists.
Kerala Cartoon Academy has conducted Cartoonist R.K.Laxmen remembrance and cartoon exhibition at KOCHI and KOTTAYAM consecutively on1st and 2nd of february 2015 with the support of Nnappa Art Gallery Kochi and Darsana Academy at Kottayam...Let 's extend our sincerity towards Sri.Kaladharan and Fr.Thomas Puthussery @ each venues for their generous support and co-operation
